In Part 1, we covered how to write your manuscript using AI. Now, we face a brutal truth of the publishing world: People absolutely judge a book by its cover.
You could have the best content in the world, but if your cover looks amateur, nobody will click on it.
In this “Expert Trainer” deep dive, we are not just telling you to “make it look nice.” We are going to show you the exact workflow, dimensions, and psychological triggers to create a bestseller-quality cover using AI and Canva.
The Technical Specs (Don’t Skip This)
Before you open any design tool, you must know the rules of the platforms.
- Amazon KDP & Google Play Standard: The golden ratio for e-books is 1.6:1.
- Ideal Dimensions: 1600 pixels wide x 2560 pixels tall.
- Resolution: 72 DPI is fine for screens, but stick to 300 DPI if you ever plan to do a “Print on Demand” paperback later.
- Color Mode: Use RGB (screens display colors in Red, Green, Blue).
Phase 1: Generating the “Base Image” with AI
Do not try to add text inside the AI generator (like Midjourney or DALL-E). AI is terrible at spelling. Use AI only to create the background art or the main character.
Expert Prompting Strategy:
When asking AI for an image, you must ask for “Negative Space.” This is empty space in the image where you will later put your title.
- Bad Prompt: “A robot sitting on a mountain thinking.”
- Expert Prompt: “A futuristic robot sitting on a mountain peak, cinematic lighting, 8k resolution, leaving empty dark sky space at the top for typography, vertical aspect ratio.”
Recommended Tools:

- Midjourney (Paid): Best for photorealism and artistic style.
- Leonardo.ai (Free/Paid): Excellent for character consistency.
- Canva “Magic Media” (Integrated): Good for simple graphics if you want to stay in one app.
Phase 2: Typography & Layout in Canva
Once you have your clean AI image, upload it to Canva. This is where you turn a “picture” into a “product.”
The 3 Rules of Cover Typography:
- Hierarchy: The TITLE should be the biggest element. The Author Name is secondary. The Subtitle is smallest.
- Contrast: If your background is dark, your text must be light (White, Yellow, Cyan). If the background is busy, put a semi-transparent black box behind the text to make it pop.
- Thumbnail Test: Zoom out until the cover is the size of a postage stamp. Can you still read the title? If not, make the font bolder and simpler.
Pro Tip: Avoid “Curly” or “Script” fonts for business or non-fiction books. Use strong “Sans Serif” fonts (like League Spartan, Montserrat, or Anton) to signal authority.
Phase 3: The “Mockup” Trick
Professional authors don’t just show the flat image; they show the book on a tablet or standing up.
- Inside Canva: Click your image $\rightarrow$ Edit Photo $\rightarrow$ Smart Mockups.
- Choose a “Tablet” or “Book Stack” mockup. Use this for your social media marketing. It increases perceived value instantly.
Conclusion: Design is Marketing
Your cover is your first salesperson. By combining the creativity of AI with the layout precision of Canva, you can create a cover that looks like it cost $500, for free.
